Welcome to GWellness where wellness, nutrition education, and youth of all ages (including the young at heart) come together! GWellness stands for God's wellness. I am Donna King, Founder of GWellness Featuring Nutrition Explorations & More! I aspire to share my interest in consuming food that is wholesome and as close to natural, the way God created it, and within a modest budget. My philosophy of applied nutrition is "educative and preventive" with a desire to encourage people to use their eating toward wellness. I especially enjoy working with youth and helping them learn about nutrition through exploring foods.
My relevant qualifications include:
Bachelor of Science in Foods and Nutrition
Graduate coursework in Nutrition Education at Queens College CUNY
Master of Arts in Christian Counseling
School Food Service Manager (NYC Department of Education)
Food Service Supervisor
Food handler certificates in Nassau County, NY and NYC
Chef at educational institutions in Nassau County, New York
My commitment to young people, plus my energy and personal belief for healthy consumption and wellness, have been exhibited over the years. Tutoring, participating on executive boards, and volunteering with the Uniondale Parent Teacher Associations (PTA), are just some examples of my service to youth. I enjoy attending an international church, and as a child attended elementary schools that included children from diverse backgrounds. I also enjoy doing hands-on activities with youth to help teach them about healthy eating. In addition to hands-on sessions, I have conducted nutrition talks with families as a part of past events. My goal is to help youth of all ages make positive, life-long decisions for wellness, and to promote foods for healthy eating and wellness. The recipes and foods presented incorporate items identified by the USDA MyPlate guidelines.
Nutrition Explorations and More are presented as workshops that cover current USDA applications, basic etiquette, sanitation, food handling, food safety, basic physiology, and food recipe experiences. GWellness Featuring Nutrition Explorations and More educates participants on the definition of nutrition and its necessity. The goal of the hands-on nutrition explorations is to teach participants how to give their bodies the best nutrition possible. We also explore food preferences and identify the healthier options. Additionally, participants are exposed to new foods and research recipe sources (e.g., the internet, cookbooks, library, etc.). Learning to shop for ingredients, create meals, and examine current local food store circulars is also part of the fun. My ability to convey information that captures the interest of youth helps promote life-preserving eating habits in our children, who often face poor health prognoses in America. I believe teaching good nutrition choices makes me an "MVP" who is genuinely interested in the prevention of disease among our youth.
